BACK STORY:
When I was a Wharton undergrad, I created an independent major, Health Care Administration, to tie together my business degree with my desire to go to medical school. I used my Wharton degree to get “practice” interviews at Wall Street firms before interviewing for medical school so I would be more prepared. My first was at Salomon Brothers in 1983, and that day completely changed my direction. I realized when I stepped onto the trading floor at Salomon that medical school was just a dream and Wall Street was going to be reality, and I never turned back. In my final interview for the job, the interviewer told me that he was looking for a “rocket scientist jock” - someone smart and competitive. I told him that I graduated from Wharton and played college football while at Penn. So I know I am at least one of the two. I guess he liked that answer as I got the job.
I think in this business, to get ahead, you need to be both a leader and a prudent risk taker. I have always been someone that likes to be the “guy with the ball” and has never been afraid to fail. I have learned that sometimes to move ahead, you don't usually get there on a straight-line approach. In this business, you need to work hard, be willing to keep learning as the business is ever changing, and have some luck.

FUTURE:
I am never one who predicts what my next steps are. There are many things I like to do outside of work - especially coaching kid's athletics. I coach football, basketball and baseball in my town and really enjoy teaching the kids the fundamentals and sportsmanship. I also am very active with the Democratic Party, involved with some incredible charitable organizations, and invest in various private business partnerships, including The National Sports Museum, opening in NYC in 2008.”

INFLUENCES:
The most important influence in my life has been my dad. He has always taught me the lesson that family comes first. He continually stressed the need to have a work-life balance, that nothing is more important them spending quality time with your wife and kids, and that you can never make up for that lost time. My dad has been happily married for over 50 years.

JUST LIKE TO MENTION . . .
I have been fortunate to work on Wall Street for over 20 years and feel it is vital to give back to your community, whether by giving your time or monetary contribution. Someone once told me, “Be charitable while you are still around to see the positive changes you are helping to create.”.
