PRIMED TO PERFORM

How to Build the Highest Performing Cultures Through the Science of Total Motivation
Author Speaker Series

CEOs, managers, and entrepreneurs are aware that culture is an important part of their employees’ performance, but few know how to build and sustain a high performing one. Legendary cultures such as those nurtured by Apple and Starbucks are considered anomalies, not predictable outcomes that can be measured, engineered and continuously improved.

Neel Doshi and Lindsay McGregor disagree. In their book PRIMED TO PERFORM: How to Build the Highest Performing Cultures Through the Science of Total Motivation (HarperBusiness, an imprint of HarperCollins; on sale October 6, 2015; hardcover nonfiction; ISBN 9780062373984), the former McKinsey & Co. consultants argue that behind every culture— terrific, mediocre, or toxic— is an elegant science. Using analyses of thousands of studies on human behavior, the results of their proprietary total motivation survey (administered to thousands of employees at fifty major companies), and case studies of companies large and small, the authors lay out systematic and sustainable approaches any organization can use to build a high performing culture or transform an existing one.

In their work, Doshi and McGregor demonstrate that motivation is at the heart of any company’s performance: why people work determines how well they work, and the most important “whys” are play, purpose, and potential. When work is done for the love (play), outcome (purpose), or developmental benefit (potential) of it—and not for emotional or economic reasons, people are better able to execute their plans. More importantly, they are also able to skillfully diverge from them when the unexpected inevitably happens. Total motivation resides at the equilibrium of these motives and cultures are great because they maximize it. As a matter of fact, Doshi and McGregor found that teams that have adopted the lessons from PRIMED TO PERFORM have increased sales from 20-200%, all while improving outcomes such as creativity, grit and ethical behavior.

The authors—who are married to each other—have over 20 years of combined experience on topics of culture and performance. From Doshi founding a tech startup once-upon-a-time (which struggled with culture), to both authors being leaders at top global banking and consulting firms, each has sustained a nagging hunch about the importance of culture. That hunch led them to not only write this book, but also to found Vega Factor, a startup dedicated to applying the principles of total motivation to real organizations using technology, process design, and education solutions.

PRIMED TO PERFORM will revolutionize the way we think about building a high performing workplace culture.
