Alvin V. Shoemaker, W’60, Hon’ 95
Former Chairman of the Board of First Boston, Inc.

Mr. Shoemaker, a private investor, is the former Chairman of the Board of First Boston, Inc., and of the First Boston Corporation.  He was named Chairman of the Board in April 1983 and retired in January 1989, at the time of its sale to Credit Swiss Bank. Previously, he was Chairman of the Executive Committee of First Boston, rejoining the firm in 1981 after three years as President and Chief Executive Officer of Blyth Eastman Paine Webber and of its predecessor, Blyth Eastman Dillon & Co.

Mr. Shoemaker began his career in the U.S. Treasury Department for the Controller of the Currency.  From that position, he became Municipal Director of the Investment Bankers Association, a Washington-based organization that represented the interests of the investment banking community, leaving Washington in 1969 to join First Boston as a Vice President.  Mr. Shoemaker was a member of the Bar Association in Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia.  He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Royal Group, Inc., Charlotte, North Carolina from 1990 to 1994, and was Chairman of United Gas Holding Corporation, Houston, Texas from 1989 to 1992.  He was a member of the Board of Directors of Royal Insurance Holdings plc, London, England, from 1990 to 1994, and a member of the Board of Directors of Michigan Law School Visitors Committee, Wharton School of Finance Board of Overseers, and a former trustee of the United States Ski Education Foundation from 1986 to 1995.  He was formerly Vice Chairman of the Securities Industry Association and a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee for Trade Negotiations from 1986 to 1989.

Mr. Shoemaker was Chairman of the University of Pennsylvania Board of Trustees from 1986 to 1994.  Co-Chairman of Penn’s successful $1.4 billion capital campaign, and Chairman of the 1993 Presidential Search Committee and member of the 2003 Presidential Search Committee.  He served as Honorary Co-Chairman of the 250th Anniversary Commission at Penn.

Mr. Shoemaker is also presently a member of the Board of Wynn Resorts and the Huntsman Chemical Company. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Wharton in 1960, Mr. Shoemaker earned a L.L.B. at the University of Michigan Law School in 1963.  He received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from University of Pennsylvania in 1995.

Mr. Shoemaker is married to the former Sally Prevost.  They have four children and ten grandchildren.  He is an active golfer, skier, and fly fisherman.
