Volunteer Manager

Reports to Vice President, Volunteer Services

Volunteer Services
The Volunteer Services Division is responsible for the Wharton Club of New York’s wonderful volunteers.  Volunteer Services creates and manages the career paths for all volunteers. From recruiting, to placement, to ensuring their enlightened self-interest is met, to thanking them for their hard work, this Division makes sure that the WCNY volunteers are as productive and happy as humanly possible.

Volunteer Manager Responsibilities:
Working closely with the management team, the Volunteer Manager is responsible for identifying volunteer needs within the organization, attracting new volunteers to the Club, placing the volunteers within the various program areas, and monitoring their success.  The Wharton Club wants to invest in recognizing volunteers, providing training and professional development for them, and screening volunteers and matching them to organizational tasks. These practices all center on enriching the volunteer experience. Essentially, Volunteer Services works to provide a culture that is welcoming to volunteers and works to retain them:

  • Welcoming and respecting volunteers as they enter the Club
  • Assigning volunteers to tasks that match their skills
  • Providing opportunities to share experiences with other volunteers
  • Engaging volunteers through regular communication
  • Retaining and promoting volunteers

To institutionalize these practices, the Volunteer Manager will work with the Club’s Administrator to create systems to keep tabs on new and on-going Club volunteers, ensuring they are assigned to the appropriate area of the club, determining if they are feeling good about their contributions, soliciting feedback from the Committee Chairs on the volunteer contributions, and developing opportunities for advancement. The Volunteer Manager will create incentive and reward programs for the volunteers, including a transparent pipeline for volunteers to work their way up through the Club’s organizational structure. Ultimately, we would like to have a seamless system that records activities and designates levels of achievement, celebrates anniversaries of volunteer's years with WCNY, and on and on. If it evolves as intended, and there is an interest, the person in this position would be in line to succeed the Vice President, Volunteer Services after a reasonable period of time.

Time Commitment:
Approximately 2 hours per week.  Note that you must have access to email which you can monitor on a daily basis, as much of the coordination among the volunteer team is conducted via email.  Being easy to reach and responsive will make the job much easier to manage.

Qualifications:
All volunteers must be supporting (dues paying) members of the Wharton Club of New York. The type of person would be most suited for the position: Having a demonstrated interest in people, nonprofit management and volunteer services. Must be a good communicator and must have exceptional organizational and people skills, supported by strong technical skills using Microsoft Office products. We are looking for people who have the time to give to the Club. All volunteers must adhere to Club policies as evidenced by their signing an annual acknowledgement form.

Application Process:
I
nterested volunteers should complete the volunteer application and submit to Gabriela Sanchez, the Club's Administrator at gsanchez@whartonny.com along with a resume and clearly indicating which volunteer position is of interest. Please explain your enlightened self-interest in serving the Club. Once the submission is received, the applicant will be contacted by one of the Club’s volunteers. The Club expects that each selected volunteer will treat this volunteer "job" as seriously as a professional job and recognize that it is an extension of his or her professional world.
