Getting Started Well - The Stages of On-Boarding

Career Speakers Series
WCNY Career Development Panel

Times of change bring excitement and promise AND a pause in momentum – particularly if they involve a new leader making a high stakes, complex transition into a new company, a new culture, a start up or turnaround situation. How and when the momentum restarts is crucial to the success of the leader, the team and the organization – not to mention the 40% of new leaders that fail in their first 18 months and that situation’s associated out of pocket and opportunity costs.

This talk is about how leaders can make the best possible starts in new roles, deliver better results faster and reduce the risk of failure. It focuses on managing the different stages of on-boarding differently and is delivered both from the perspective of the company and of the new leader. The stages include:
• “Lombardi Time” before the first contact between company and candidate
• “The Dance of the Bumble Bees” after the first contact but before the offer
• “Due Diligence” between offer and acceptance
• “The Fuzzy Front End” between acceptance and official start date
• “Under the Microscope” the first 100 days in a new role
