Amazon's Impact on Food and Beverage Retail and Manufacturing--and How to Compete

The WCNY Retail Network invites alumni working in the Food and Beverage Industry to an exciting and informative discussion, on January 30th, on the impact of Amazon on this category. We will host a panel of thought leaders from academia and industry, featuring our esteemed Baker Professor Barbara Kahn, of the Wharton School, Jonathan Tretler, North American Head of the Consumer and Retail Investment Banking Group at HSBC, and Phil Roos, CEO of Great Lakes Growth Works. The panel will be moderated by Peter Hildick-Smith, Founder and CEO of Codex Group with introductory remarks by Susan Teplitz, Chair, WhRN.

Peter Hildick-Smith will present original research on this space just being fielded. Professor Barbara Kahn will discuss her book still in development and the entire panel will then discuss issues facing retailers competing with Amazon with an eye toward strategies that can help them. More detailed bios on participants and the work they will be presenting follows:

Professor Barbara Kahn, Baker Professor of Marketing at The Wharton School is an internationally recognized expert on retailing, variety seeking, brand loyalty, product assortment and design and consumer and patient decision making. Barbara co-authored Grocery Revolution: The New Focus on the Consumer, Global Brand Power: Leveraging Branding for Long Term Growth, and is working on a new book on Disruption in Retailing: New Ways to Compete.

Barbara will discuss her new book on how to compete in this space with lessons from retailers in a variety of categories including but not limited to Walmart, Amazon, Warby Parker, Sephora and others.

Barbara Kahn is Baker Professor of Marketing at The Wharton School, served two terms as the Director of the Baker Retailer Center. Prior to being on the faculty at Wharton, Barbara served as Dean of the School of Business Administration, University of Miami and Vice Dean of the Wharton Undergraduate program. Barbara holds an MBA and PhD from Columbia University.

Jonathan Tretler is the North American Head of the Consumer and Retail Investment Banking Group at HSBC. Focused on both M&A and capital markets, he has been a banker covering the sector for over 20 years with a longstanding focus on the food and beverage industry. Jonathan has a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from Wharton.

Phil Roos, CEO of Great Lakes Growth Works, is an expert on consumer goods innovation, branding and growth strategies, with a focus on the food and beverage industry. He has also served as CEO of Among Friends Baking Mixes; SVP Marketing, Little Caesers Pizza; President, Delicious/Frookie snack company, and in brand management at Gatorade and Quaker Oats. He has an MBA from Harvard.

Peter Hildick-Smith, President of Codex Group, pioneered quantitative pre-market testing to help book publishers and retailers (including Target and Barnes & Noble) better anticipate and compete more effectively in Amazon's debut consumer market. The company's findings have been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes and NPR, among others. Prior to founding Codex, Peter was SVP, Customer Management, GE Capital Retail Services serving national retail clients including Walmart and Sam's Club. He began his product management career in the food industry -- running the frozen breakfast, canned foods and wholesome snacks businesses for the Quaker Oats Company. He earned his MBA from The Wharton School.

Peter will moderate the panel and with Phil will present the findings of the research they are currently fielding--Compass 2017, an ongoing quantitative consumer grocery market testing program. Peter will share the highlights of Amazon's increased consumer impact in food and grocery, identifying winning strategies, gaps and those markets next in line for potential Amazon disintermediation.
