In 2003, Rwanda’s newly passed constitution declared that the country was committed to “equality between men and women” and decreed that women should hold at least thirty percent of parliamentary seats. Today, a larger percentage of women (61%) serve in parliament in Rwanda than in any other country in the world. Rwandan women are leaders not only in government but in business and all sectors of society and the economy.
