We are in the middle of an energy transition that involves a shift from burning fossil fuels – oil, coal, natural gas – to generating electricity to using renewable resources such as solar, wind, or hydro energy. The path to de-carbonizing energy, however, has been seriously impacted by the COVID 19 pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine.

Meet Our Panel:
Dr. Mark Alan Hughes is Professor of Practice at the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design and Founding Faculty Director of the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy. He is also a Faculty Fellow of the Penn Institute for Urban Research, a Research Fellow of the Wharton Risk Center, and a Distinguished Senior Fellow at Penn's Fox Leadership Program. He has been a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Center for Urban and Metropolitan Policy, a Senior Adviser at the Ford Foundation, and a weekly opinion columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News. Hughes is the author and performer of the 2021 audiobook Livable Cities. Hughes holds a B.A. in religion and art history from Swarthmore College and a Ph.D. in regional science from the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the Princeton faculty in 1986 at the age of 25, has taught at Penn since 1999, and is widely published in the leading academic journals of several disciplines, including Economic Geography, Urban Economics, Political Science Quarterly, Policy Analysis and Management, and the Journal of the American Planning Association, for which he won the National Planning Award in 1992.
Roman Kramarchuck, Head of Future Energy Analytics, S&P Global Platts Commodity Insights, leads efforts to analyze the impacts of the energy transition – driven by policy changes and technology advancements – on the energy sector, with special focus on clean energy technologies (i.e., hydrogen, stationary storage, electric vehicles/alternative transport, renewables, etc.). He oversees Future Energy Outlooks content, advising clients on medium and long term energy market views (including reference case and 2 degree scenarios). Roman launched and continues to oversee the Greenhouse Gas and North American Environmental Markets – content areas - covering analytics and outlooks around carbon/environmental markets and policies.
Prior to joining PIRA, now part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, he was at the U.S. EPA, developing key power plant and industrial emissions regulations at the Clean Air Markets Division. With PG&E and before that at PA Consulting / PHB Hagler Bailly, he evaluated strategies regarding power sector fuel choice, capital investments and trading. Roman also worked on international projects to develop power markets and regulatory capacity in Ukraine, Armenia and India. At the Federal Reserve Board, Roman analyzed trends in industrial production.
He has an M.P.P. from the Harvard Kennedy School and a B.A. in economics and B.S.E. in systems engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
Oliver Jenkins (W'16), is an analyst at Millennium Management, LLC covering the refining and oil and gas midstream sectors. He recently joined a new $1.4Bn pod at Millennium after six and a half years at Zimmer Partners, LP, a leading global infrastructure hedge fund investing in various infra verticals across real estate, utilities, energy, telecom, and transport. As an analyst at Zimmer, Oliver was a key member of the midstream team and helped launch coverage of the transports sector. Prior to his time at Zimmer, Oliver received two degrees in finance and mechanical engineering from UPenn's Management and Technology program.
