WHFN Event: Distressed Debt Panel

Michael Weinstock - Monarch Capital
Mr. Weinstock is Chief Executive Officer and co-Portfolio Manager of Monarch Capital. Prior to founding Monarch in March 2002, Mr. Weinstock was a Managing Director of Lazard and served as co-Portfolio Manager of the Lazard Debt Recovery Funds.

In 1992, he joined Lazard to build a distressed debt research effort. Under Mr. Weinstock’s leadership, Lazard’s distressed debt research team was ranked #1 in the distressed debt category by Institutional Investor magazine in 1998.

Prior to joining Lazard, Mr. Weinstock became a distressed debt research analyst in 1991 when he joined R.D. Smith & Co., a pioneer in the field of distressed debt investing. Prior to that, he was an investment banker for seven years at Salomon Brothers and Goldman Sachs working on corporate finance, securitization, and mergers and acquisitions transactions.

Mr. Weinstock is a Wharton alum (B.S.) and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Bruce Richards - Marathon Asset Management
Bruce Richards is the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Managing Partner of Marathon Asset Management. Richards is responsible for general oversight of the $12.7 billion the firm manages on behalf of its institutional investors. He also leads the firm’s Executive Committee and is a member of its Investment Committee. Richards' day-to-day presence is critical in maximizing Marathon's synergies and leveraging the intellectual capital throughout Marathon.

Prior to founding Marathon, Richards worked on Wall Street for 15 years, including 10 years as a Managing Director in the fixed income divisions of Smith Barney and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette where he was head of a trading desk responsible for principal investments and market making.

Richards received his B.A. in Economics, summa cum laude, from Tulane University (1982) and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Moderator - Brad Sweeney, Barclays

Brad Sweeney is currently a Managing Director in the distressed-credit trading business at Barclays where he heads the firm’s US Distressed Desk Analyst team. In his current role, Mr. Sweeney has primary responsibility for significant distressed credits in the financial, real-estate, oil and gas, and power industries, including Energy Future Holdings and Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and has been involved as a creditor and as member of ad hoc creditor committees in a large number of corporate restructurings. Before joining Barclays in 2008, Mr. Sweeney was a senior analyst in Lehman Brothers Distressed & Special Situations group. Mr. Sweeney graduated from the University of Kansas with a B.A. in economics, mathematics, and political science, and holds an M.A. in economics from Northwestern University as well as an MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Mr. Sweeney currently serves on the Advisory Board of The University of Kansas Honors Program.
